INTRODUCTION

The "For Freedom" Project

The For FREEDOM Project aspires to lift up the cause of freedom through this poetic call to action for all generations to stand up and be counted among those who are committed to the fight for human rights, dignity and justice. The For FREEDOM Project is the call of our ancestors to rise up and “do something”.

ABOUT the "For FREEDOM" poem . . . My childhood friend, Dr. Millicent E. Brown, in 2024, published an inspiring, MUST READ memoir, Another Sojourner Looking for Truth: My Journey from Civil Rights to Black Power and Beyond. This book touched my very soul. As the last page was turned, I grabbed a pencil and paper and penned the poem, "For FREEDOM", in her honor. The muses spoke; I responded and waited to know when the time was right to share it with you.

The video reading of the poem flows from my heart through the voices of my iconic sisters, the Wise Women Freedom Collective, who bring the spirit of the freedom movement to each verse through their own living legacies. Our hope is that you will be inspired by this call to action to “do something”. As you feel into this video experience with us, consider: What freedom means to you?

The Poem

For FREEDOM: To Millicent E. Brown

  • For FREEDOM born.
    White supremacy’s scorn.
    By colorism torn.
Birthed by causes in ancestral loins.
Impossible not to sound the horn.
    Even if often feeling alone.
  • For FREEDOM’s call,
    I saw it all.
Charleston’s first with a story to tell.
Boston’s classic cover of upper hell.
    Georgia’s mecca did not quell.
Sent me packing west to Cali for a spell.
  • For FREEDOM’s heart,
    I do my part.
It’s where I got my start.
Where I leave my historical mark.
On history’s path with sun so dark.
Liberty’s way not a walk in the park.
  • For FREEDOM’s Soul
    I remain brave and bold
Legacy of Miss Millie, MaeDe and J Arthur took hold.
Would not let The Freedom March get cold.
Vested well in the arms of soldiers true.
Black like me and stuck like glue.
    To visions only God knew.
Ella, Thurgood, Septima – to name a few.
Endless gratitude I give to you.
Yet there is so much more to do!
  • For FREEDOM’s future
    I journeyed to education’s lure.
Readied and abled to find a cure.
My memoir soon I did pen.
Only scratching the surface of my life in the lion’s den.
Telling my truth so others can win.
    FREEDOM’s power to conquer sin.
Now I am waiting for YOU to JOIN IN!
